Wizard101 Easter Bunny Run 2016 Recap

Last week, we've had a fun Easter event in Wizard101: the Easter Bunny Run! This event, which was a great way to get everyone together in-game, was created by Edward Lifegem from Around the Spiral, and co-hosted by Autumn Dreamwalker, Ian Stormstaff, Paige Moonshade, Fallon Fireblade and myself.

The Easter Bunny Run took place in the Wizard City Commons, and the starting line was the Rainbow Bridge. Despite the considerable amount of planning beforehand, there are so many things we cannot control. Unfortunately, an early crowd caused an overflow and 3 areas filled up quickly, preventing many Wizards from joining us in Area 1 of the Vampire realm.

After 30 minutes and countless laps around The Commons, the first after party was hosted at my Botanical Gardens, where Wizards had the opportunity to do some PvP matches and play the Tag game, which confirmed that we had nearly 100 attendees at that point!


Shortly after the end of the first after party, we invited and encouraged everyone to go through Fallon Fireblade's maze. Of course, we kept the best for last and Wizards were really enthusiastic about this, considering the amount of players that joined us.

Thank you all for coming! I'm sure we all had a blast and I'm looking forward to the next event!

Khrysalis Furniture Packs Coming Soon

As we travel across the Sprial, we get to see some fascinating places! Different creatures, different cultures and even different architecture. The worlds of the Spiral are so diverse and that's what's amazing about Wizard101: creating is an ever-expanding art, especially when it comes to housing!

With the Shadow Queen's downfall, Khrysalis is healthy and thriving once again! And we received word from Khrysalis locals that they will start selling new furniture in the Crown Shop. For those who are bitten by the decorating bug, this should be exciting news!

The April 2016 Newsletter states that these Furniture Packs are coming soon, and I'm guessing they will be available once the Spring Update goes live. Check out these sneak peek images, to give you some ideas!

Wizard101 Spring 2016 Update Goes Live

The Wizard101 Spring Update is now live! This update includes Daily Assignments, New Skeleton Key Bosses, Zafaria Fishing, the Gear Vault and more!

Daily Assignments
Wizards Level 12 and above should visit Aegon Statz, in Ravenwood, to take on the quest "The Gravulum Order" for an introduction to Daily Assignments. Each day that you complete the Daily Assignment, will be granted a progressively better reward, with the 15th day providing the best reward possible. Daily Assignments reward Gold, Arena Tickets, Crowns and more! If you are unable to complete a Daily Assignment, don't worry. You'll be able to pick back up where you left off at any time.


Stars of the Spiral takes a look at the Daily Assignments and some of the badges you can earn from this new feature!

New Skeleton Key Bosses
Three new Skeleton Key Bosses have been added for those in search of a new challenge. Bring a Wooden Skeleton Key and visit the Krokotopia Library to face off against the Rank 4 boss, Ra. A Stone Skeleton Key can be used to unlock a battle against the Rank 13 boss, Ixcax Cursedwing within Azteca's Black Sun Pyramid. Those in search of the highest level of challenge should bring a Gold Skeleton Key to River of Frozen Tears in Polaris to take on the rank 17 boss, Omen Stribog.

As usual, Mercenaries for Hire have come up with a Bad Omen guide to help you get through Omen Stribog safely.


Spells
The Scholars of the Arcanum now have additional off-school spells to teach Wizards of at least Level 100:
  • Baba Yaga can teach Orthrus;
  • Ignus Ferric can teach Fire Dragon;
  • Ione Virga can teach Triton and Storm Lord;
  • Jaki Whisperwind can teach Power Nova;
  • Qismah Shasa can teach Death Trap and Skeletal Dragon;
  • Tarrak Hadfield can teach Ice Trap and Frost Giant;
  • Zander can teach Nature's Wrath and Forest Lord.
A new Star spell has been added to the Star School Trainer in Azteca. Devotion increases Life Damage by 25%, increases Power Pip chance by 5% and increases incoming Death damage by 10% for 4 rounds. To access this spell, Wizards must be at least level 84 and have completed the quest "Third Star on the Left" in Azteca.

New Fishing Location
Fish, including some new species, can now be found swimming in the waters of Zafaria! Players will receive the badge Prodigious Angler for reaching Fishing level 20.

Some of the Fishing rewards in Zafaria include promotional wands and staffs, like the Amarathine Staff and Umbra Blade, and even brand new staffs!


Gear Vault
Wizards can now store additional items in their home with the new Gear Vault housing item! It can hold up to 100 items including Hats, Robes, Boots, Wands, Athames, Amulets and Rings. Place the Gear Vault in your house and click the "Open Gear Vault" icon while in the "Place Object" screen. This works similar to music players, aquariums and the Seed Vault, and is customizable. From there you can move items between the vault and your Backpack. You may only place two Gear Vaults in each of your houses, one inside and one outside. Gear Vaults can be purchased from the Crown Shop or crafted using a recipe available from Toshio in Mooshu.

New Jewel Vendor
A new Jewel Vendor has arrived in Unicorn Way. Jordo Mistborn sells Jewels for high level Wizards.

New Crown Shop Items & Pet Drops
There are a couple of new items in the Crown Shop: the Wild Hare mount and the Khrysalis Furniture Packs! On top of that, several new pet drops have been added to creatures of the Spiral.

Customizing Gear Vaults in Wizard101

The Gear Vault is a new housing item that was introduced in the Spring 2016 Update, that can hold up to 100 including Hats, Robes, Boots, Wands, Athames, Amulets and Rings. What's truly amazing about it is that you can customize your very own Gear Vault and give it a unique look!

Although you can place items on the Gear Vault normally, customizing it in this way is somewhat limited. However, glitching can easily overcome these limitations! If you aren't familiar with glitching techniques in Wizard101, you can read my Guide to Merging Housing Items and Advanced Ghostly Rug Glitch to delve right into it.

Pirate101 Book 15 Coming This Summer

Dear Pirates, I can happily say that the wait is almost over: Book 15 is coming to Pirate101 this Summer!

After teasing two vague hints earlier this year, one of a mystery character and another of a mysterious location, Community Managers revealed the forthcoming expansion of Valencia Part 2 in the April 2016 KingsIsle Live episode, taking players through the emerald skies of this ancient and magnificent world.

Valencia Part 2 is set to pick up where the storyline ended in Aquila, with our Pirate Captain receiving a message from the mysterious "G" on how to destroy Kane and setting sail to Valencia to meet him/her in person.

New Hybrids Discovered in Wizard101

Last year, Professor Greyrose and Dworgyn confirmed that there were still 100 undiscovered hybrids in Wizard101. It is very likely that this number may have decreased due to the discovery of many new pets, but the addition of countless new pet drops in the Spring Update may have opened the door for new hybrids.

New Hybrids
The Flamenco and Grimhorn pets, sold by Sir Nigel Higgenbottom in the Pet Pavilion, produce many new hybrids, when mixed with the Firestorm Quetzal, dropped by Moh'Lharz in Lower Zigazag. Please, keep in mind that hybrids are rare, so don't worry if you don't get one on your first try. You'll find a list of all the recently discovered hybrids below, and the pets needed to produce it.

Save the Frogs Day

Today marks the annual Save the Frogs Day, the world's largest day of amphibian education and conservation action. We, too, have frogs in the Spiral and it is fundamental to know why they are important.

Why frogs?
Myth Wizards will know how cool these creatures are, but why is it so important to save them?

Frogs are an integral part of the food web:
  • They keep waterways clean by feeding on algae;
  • They eat large quantities of insects, including disease vectors that can transmit fatal illnesses to humans;
  • They are an important food source to a diverse array of predators;
  • The disappearance of frog populations disturbs an intricate food web, and results in negative impacts that cascade through the ecosystem.
Frogs are bioindicators:
  • Most frogs require suitable habitat in both the terrestrial and aquatic environments, and have permeable skin that can easily absorb toxic chemicals. These traits make frogs especially susceptible to environmental disturbances, and thus frogs are considered accurate indicators of environmental stress;
  • The health of frogs is thought to be indicative of the health of the biosphere as a whole.
Frogs in medical research:
  • They produce a wide array of skin secretions, many of which have significant potential to improve human health through their use as pharmaceuticals;
  • Scientists found over 76 different antimicrobial peptides on the skin of the European Common Brown Frog (Rana temporaria).

Threats to frogs
The primary causes of amphibian extinctions are pollution, loss of habitat, climate change, invasive species, road mortality, over-harvesting for the pet and food trades, and the infectious disease chytridiomycosis, which is spread by human activity.

First Pirate101 Arc Coming to a Close

The quest to El Dorado may be halted sooner than expected, Pirates! It may come as a shock to some of you, but KingsIsle revealed yesterday that the first story arc of Pirate101 will come to an end this Summer, following the addition of Book 15, which will be divided in two chapters.

What we know about Book 15
These informations were revealed by Professor Falmea, in the May 2016 Producer's Letter:

"We're able to offer a little more of the Pirate story with Book 15. Yes, we will be continuing the main storyline this summer. It's two chapters, but they're packed with revelations, resolutions, and rapscallions. We're actually pretty far along with it, and we expect it to hit the Test Realm before too long."

She added:

"We'll have more details as things progress, but have ever you wondered who built the Armada? Or the REAL scope of Kane's plans? There will be answers, lots of answers, and of course, more questions too in the thrilling conclusion to the first story arc. Interested in new power and wealth to chase after? We've got it. Want to put five more levels of new and improved battle prowess to the test with the most difficult challenge yet? I hope so, because that's what you're in for with Valencia, Part 2."

Book 15 will raise the level cap to 70 and with the climax coming this soon, I am guessing we will have to defeat Kane and his last remaining Captains, Queen and Phule, in "the most difficult challenge yet." Of course, considering the amount of things that remain to be done and the five new levels, reaching El Dorado now would be rushing it. In my opinion, our final showdown with Kane will be a turning point in the storyline, where the last piece of the map gets stolen or is lost somehow, preventing us from continuing our expedition to the lost city of gold. The curtain would still close after The Armada's downfall, which would conclude the first arc in an epic way.

Captain Hande and the secret hideout
In February, a concept art of an unknown character was unveiled. It is now confirmed to be Captain Hande, one of the most infamous pirate captains in Skull Island. According to Professor Falmea:

"Barnabus Hande is renowned for his ferocity and cunning. A bully to his crews and a nightmare to his enemies, Hande's temper and stubbornness are the stuff of legend. After making a name for himself in the Napoleguinic Wars by double-crossing all four fleets and stealing a horde of gold, Captain Hande hit a period of bad luck. Mutinies and a few particularly nasty sea beast battles cost him a leg, then a hand, and then his other leg – leaving him with just one hand and a name that became something of a joke in Skull Island. Despite his stubbornness, Captain Hande found piracy too difficult after he lost his second leg, so he went into retirement. However, rumors around Flotsam say that the surly old pirate is coming out of retirement for a new scheme, and pirates all over the Spiral are shaking at the prospect."

The secret location that was teased in March is in fact "the long-hidden hideout of a famous pirate, where secrets of the Pirate’s past are waiting to be found... or lost."

Pirate Hideout Decorating Contest

As you probably know, Pirate101's highly anticipated Book 15 is set to launch this Summer. In order to promote the exciting announcement of Valencia Part 2, I decided to concoct a contest for both Wizard101 and Pirate101!

Contest
I want you to decorate a Pirate hideout, using your Dorm Room in Wizard101. Follow the guidelines below to enter the contest. 

Guidelines
  1. Create a Pirate hideout in Wizard101, using your Dorm Room;
  2. You may use as many items as you wish to make your Dorm Room complete, following the theme "Pirate Hideout";
  3. You must stay within the Dorm Room space (if you use floating techniques, you must stay within the walls of your room!);
  4. All entries must be sent by email to frostcallerfan@gmail.com, with the title "Pirate Hideout Decorating Contest", along with your Wizard's name (such as David SilverHunter) by the deadline;
  5. You may include up to 3 screenshots in your email entry (please, no more than that!);
  6. If you are under the age of 13, please have your parent's or guardian's permission to enter;

Valencia Part 2 Fansite Teasers

All the Pirate101 Fansites were given exclusive teasers for Valencia Part 2 and having been promoted to official fansite of the game today, I've got one, too! As you can tell from the picture above, the room those characters are in strangely resembles the dorms in Wysteria's Pigswick Academy. Interesting, right?

Last week, we got a teaser of the Calabria Skyway in Valencia! Players were even graced with an email from KingsIsle announcing Valencia Part 2.


The Test Realm must be really close, considering the amount of teasers and hype about Book 15! My guess is that we'll have this new content to test sometime in the next two weeks, so that Valencia Part 2 would go live in June.

Mother Ocean Day

Mother Ocean Day is a relatively new celebration, as it was introduced for the first time in 2013. It is similar to World Oceans Day, celebarted on June 8th, and has the same purpose: to remind everyone of the major part the ocean has in everyday life. Conserving and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources is also one of the 17 Goals to Transform Our World, instated by the United Nations in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Did You Know?
Here are some interesting facts about the oceans:
  • They occupy nearly 71% of our planet's surface;
  • More than 97% of all our planet's water is contained in the ocean;
  • More than 90% of this habitat exists in the deep sea, known as the abyss;
  • Less than 10% of this living space has been explored by humans.

Top 5 Oceans in the Spiral
We have many oceans and seas in the Spiral, and I decided to share my favorite places for Mother Ocean Day. For the purpose of this post, I considered oceans and seas the same (even though they are not).

1. Northern Sea - the Nothern Sea in Polaris, home to the Pingouins and Sea Lions, is the perfect location for Ice Wizards to train and practice their magic undisturbed.

2. StarFall Sea - this stormy, melancholic and vast sea, surrounding the Ruined Alcazar in Khrysalis, is definitely the place where Storm Wizards can replenish their batteries and get the power flowing again.

3. The Grotto - the perfect spot for Wizards who seek to go scuba diving during their extracurricular activities, and explore coral reef and the underwater fauna.

4. Atlantea - the long lost home of the God of the seas, Poseidon, Atlantea is a mythical place, long thought to have been swallowed by the seas.

5. Floating Lands - the sunny beaches and warm sea of Celestia make it the perfect spot for a Summer vacation, which is only a few weeks away.

Pirate101's Armada Elite Revealed

The Armada Leader, Kane, and his elite henchwoman, known as The Queen, were previously only seen in concept art and in the Puppet Shows. Today, Vanessa Mythdust revealed a brand new teaser on MMORPG.com, featuring the two elite bosses. The sneak peek also depicts Bishop on the left side.

As mentioned by Captain Avery in "The Armada" Puppet Show, "Kane is smarter, stronger, and faster than any living being." The Queen, however, is veiled in secrecy. Nothing is known about her abilities or power, but if we consider the rules of chess, she must be very powerful and the pinnacle of versatility.


As for what's to come, the idea of taking on Phule, Bishop, Kane and The Queen is beyond frightening! This further strengthens the challenging final battle, foreshadowed in the May 2016 Producer's Letter.

For KingsIsle to release this teaser now, it can only mean that Test Realm is imminent. We are dangerously close to setting sail to Valencia Part 2, Pirates!

Reduction in Force at KingsIsle

Yesterday, many news agencies relayed information about massive layoffs at KingsIsle, the company behind the MMOs Wizard101 and Pirate101. Most players were confused as to what really happened and the rumor was later confirmed by our Community Manager, Tom Purdue (Dworgyn/One-Eyed Jack), in an official statement from KingsIsle:


For those of you who asked, a layoff is "the temporary suspension or permanent termination of employment of an employee or (more commonly) a group of employees (collective layoff) for business reasons, such as when certain positions are no longer necessary or when a business slow-down occurs."

Sadly, we bid farewell to Leala Ulrich (Professor Greyrose/Bonnie Anne), #JuliafromKI and many other great people, as they leave KingsIsle. They all did a fantastic job and helped Wizard101 and Pirate101 be the awesome games they are today! Players were quick to react and took it to Wizard101 to show their love, gratitude and support. You can use the hashtag #StayStrongKI to send your well wishes and support messages to all employees, former and current.


Regarding the future of the games, I am happy to say that Wizard101 and Pirate101 are safe. As you can see from KingsIsle's statement, Valencia Part 2 will most likely be released on Test Realm next week and Wizard101 has two new updates, slated for this Summer and in the Fall.

As for the next episode of KingsIsle Live, which was supposed to be hosted next week, it was postponed to an undetermined date, which is perfectly understandable. For the time being, stay positive and get your ships ready to set sail to Valencia!

7 Reasons to Play Pirate101

You've played Wizard101 for a while, but never actually gave Pirate101 a try? With an upcoming expansion on the horizon, here are seven reasons why you should start playing Pirate101 in the near future!

1. Free-to-Play MMO
The first and maybe most appealing aspect about Pirate101 is that it offers free to play areas. Of course, if you want to explore the rest of the Spiral, you will need a membership or unlock paying areas forever, with Crowns. As a Free-to-Play MMO, players get to play Mini Games, sail a ship through the Skyways and engage in ship combat, train and morph pets, and even decorate the Pirate's bunkhouse. If you want to go beyond that, check out the chapter pricing.

2. Amazing Storyline
After creating your character, you'll embark in an exciting adventure. You start as a hostage, but soon find yourself freed by two faithful allies, as you escape your first encounter with the mighty Armada. This epic voyage will take you to many worlds of the Spiral, with your Pirate chasing after the pieces of the map to El Dorado, the fabled city of gold. 3. Advanced Pet System
Pirate101's pet system results from the feedback from its older sister, Wizard101. As such, Pirates benefit from an advanced and improved system, giving pets much more relevance in helping players. While training a pet in Pirate101 is time-consuming, the wait is worth it! Your Pirate will gain more power from pets and once they appear in combat, they will actually fight alongside your Captain.

Another cool thing about pets is Pet Sparring in Bestia! This innovative and non-violent pet combat system allows you to join practice or play PvP matches with your friends, in which 1 to 4 pets will compete against the other player's team, similarly to Pokémon. The pet system in Pirate101 is much more versatile, which is definitely a strong point!

4. Strategic Combat
Pirate101 has a combat system that is entirely based on strategy and skill. Granted, chance is always a factor to consider, but strategy is ultimately what will lead your Pirate to victory!


In Wizard101, most players will agree that the one who goes first in Ranked PvP will most likely win the match, and that's usually the case. However, in Pirate101, especially in Ranked PvP, the win is decided by which player has the best strategy. This is a great reason for competitive players to try it out!

5. Nautical Combat
The ship combat system is another thing that makes Pirate101 one of a kind! While ship PvP does not exist at this time, you will engage in nautical combat many times as you level up. Some fights will be tough, but they are very unique and so much fun! What's even more amazing are the occasional Nautical XP events, where players gather in a fixed area to destroy ships and gain nautical XP fast.

6. Great Management
The community management for both Pirate101 and Wizard101 is excellent, and the interaction between players and Community Managers is exceptionally good! We have monthly livestreaming events, called KingsIsle Live, with Community Managers showcasing gameplay and giving away awesome prizes! 

7. Fantastic Community
The Pirate101 Community is very kind and welcoming! Even in Ranked PvP, the great majority of players are very humble and always ready to give you advice and direction to improve your skills. When you visit the Morphing Tent in Bestia, a lot of Pirates with awesome pets will kindly morph with you, so that you can get a better one. Fansites regularly host in-game events for the community to get together and have fun. You'll even make great friends along the way!

Endangered Species Day in the Spiral

Endangered Species Day is an opportunity for people of all ages to learn about the importance of protecting  endangered species, and everyday actions they can take to help protect them. For that purpose, the United Nations has proclaimed May 22nd the International Day for Biological Diversity, to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. In fact, halting biodiversity loss is one of the 17 Goals to Transform Our World.

"Biodiversity is the foundation for life and for the essential services provided by ecosystems. It therefore underpins peoples' livelihoods and sustainable development in all areas of activity, including economic sectors such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries and tourism, among others. By halting biodiversity loss, we are investing in people, their lives and their well-being."

We, too, have a great biodiversity and many endangered species in the Spiral. Here are a few:

Test Realm Brings Book XV to Pirate101

The long anticipated Book XV is ready to be tested in the Pirate101 Test Realm! This game update introduces Valencia Part 2, new companion promotions, new powers and much more.

Return to Valencia
Yarr! Adventures await ye in the highly anticipated release of Valencia Part 2, in Pirate101! The story of the battle against the Armada continues within the grand city of Florenza, in the Calabria Skyway. Face off against the Armada's evil leader, Kane, and put an end to his tyranny. Pirates who have completed the quest "A Call for Help" in Aquila should visit Captain Avery to take on the quest "Return to Valencia." You'll know you have completed the required quest if you have the badge Aquila Legend.


With this storyline extension, players will be able to level their characters from 65 to 70 (both Character and Nautical Level), in 2 new Chapters priced at 2,499 Crowns each. In addition, the available gold cap has been increased to 250,000 gold. Several new badges have also been added to commemorate your completion of quests and exploration in Valencia.

Note: the final battle of Valencia Part 2 will not be available to play on Test Realm. KingsIsle is still adding the finishing touches on this epic fight!

New Companion Promotions
Pirates who complete the quest "Subterranean Subterfuge" will recruit the Valencia resistance fighter, Contessa Argento, to their crew. Contessa's Swashbuckler skills will be an asset to every Pirate in the fight against the Armada!

An exciting mission will lead you on the trails of the notorious Captain Hande and teach you more about a very important (and famous) pirate! The following companions have received a new promotion at Level 70:

Talents and Powers
New Talents and Powers are available to train! Visit your class trainers in Skull Island at Level 65 and Level 70 to improve your skills. The Clandestine Trainers also have new ranks of talents to teach you for training points. Some new powers are also available on equipment for those lucky enough to find these exciting rewards!

  • Privateers will learn Repel Boarders 2 and Blast of Discord, a new power that has the chance to make the enemy team randomly attack their allies;
  • Buccaneerswill learn Turn the Tide 3 and The Reaper, a new power that will attack all adjacent enemies and then knock them back by 1 square;
  • Musketeers will learn Quick Draw 3 and Double Tap 3;
  • Swashbucklers will learn Riposte 3 and Trap Sense 2;
  • Witchdoctors will learn Mojo Echo 2 and Mojo Burn, a new power that will deal damage and add a damage-over-time effect to the target.
Puppet Shows
Learn more about the story of the Spiral in three new Puppet Shows! Hear the tale of the Resistance movement against the Armada, learn more about the creator of Kane and get another glimpse of El Dorado. Note: these will not be able to be viewed on Test Realm but will be available to see when the update goes to the live game.


Pets, Mounts and More
New pets and mounts will be added to the Scrip vendor, Honest Thomas Purdue, in the Brawlin’ Hall for the upcoming PVP Seasons. Level 70 Champion weapon rewards have also been added.

Pets can now reach Level 70 and receive a new talent for all of their hard work!

Giorgio Lamborghini at the Florenza Docks has many upgraded ships for Pirates of Nautical Level 65 or higher to purchase. These ships come in various origins and styles including: Bison, Royal Navy, Samoorai, Pirate and Eagle. His friend Letizia Motoguzzi has lots of new ship equipment to go with your new ship of choice!
